Read this: Big Brother could be watching you!

Something rather alarming has been brought to my attention by Matt Rider, an old friend from our church at Reading Vineyard (thanks Matt...). I have copied his email for your perusal, in the hope that those of you who read this and reside in the UK might want to sign the petition too. Again please pass this on to anyone else or post it on your own blog. Obviously, the more signatures the better, and it shouldn't take too much of your time.If you're reading this from the States, please...pray, for us brits!! I know in the scheme of things, there are many more things to be worried about than this, but still - I feel CROSS. And I feel that as a Christian in my country, I want to make a stand for what is just and right. But this feels neither just nor right. So please read on and sign... Thank you.

The government's proposal to introduce road pricing
will mean YOU having to purchase a tracking device for your car and paying a
monthly bill to use it. The tracking device will cost about £200 and in a
recent study by the BBC, the lowest monthly bill was £28 for a rural florist and
£194 for a delivery driver. A non-working Mum who used the car to take the kids
to school paid £86 in one month.
On top of this massive increase in tax, you will be tracked.
Somebody will know
where you are at all times. They will also know how fast you have been
going, so even if you accidentally creep over a speed limit in time
you can probably expect a Notice of Intended Prosecution with your monthly
bill. It has also been estimated that implementing this technology will
cost the taxpayer £60 Billion in total. Just think how that could improve the
existing road network or public transport - and don’t even get me started on
giving it to the NHS!
The idea of tracking every vehicle at all
times is sinister and wrong whilst road pricing is already here with the very
high level of UK government taxation on fuel. The more you travel - the more tax
you pay.
Road charging will be an unfair tax on those who live apart from
their families, who commute distances to work and indeed senior citizens and
low income families who will not be able to afford the high monthly costs. If
you care about our freedom and stopping the constant bashing of the
car driver, please sign the petition on Downing Street's new
'democracy at work' website and pass this on to as many people as possible
Many thanks
Matt
NB: Ex-pats can also sign this petition - as I seem to know a worryingly increasing amount of you!!! Perhaps you all saw this coming!!

Did you used to go to Reading Vineyard Church?
My uncle and aunt and their family go to that church, and I've been there a couple of times when my cousins got baptised.

mmm, yes. we in fact very much still got there!! It is the best church I've been to in a Long Long time :-)
So - question is - HAVE WE MET????
Who are your uncle and aunt?
I don't suppose it would be the Hartwells by any chance?

ooops, that should read: "...GO there" - sorry

I wasn't sure from your profile whether you were in Reading or not. But how exciting! But yes, it is the Hartwells. How did you guess? Did you see them on my blog (if you haven't seen them, I've got Christmas pictures when them in) We were there for the baptism of Laura, I think it was in late December.

I guessed it was them cos you said a couple of your cousins were baptised at two different times; and let's face it, your family is blimmin' HUGE!!
Most people I know seem to either be acquainted with the Hartwells, and know them v well, or, indeed, be related to them :-)
Wasn't it Lydia who got baptised the most recently? I think Laura's was back in Feb...Either way - they are such an inspirational family, and we are blessed to have them in our church.
I am actually a staff intern at RVC so see Denise quite a lot.
Anyway; so long...
xx

by in Reading, I know you're not in reading, but how near to Reading - my geography isn't very good of that part of the world!

Debs said...

Yes, it was Lydia most recently come to think of it. There's too many of them to keep track of!

i think in principle i don't mind paying for using the roads [especailly with the environmenal impact], just the tracking thang bothers me... if it just took my milage and emailed it somewhere i wouldn't have a problem... time to write to my MP again...

http://www.theyworkforyou.com/ is brillaint for doing this...

good point Paul; being French (or half French rather) I am quite used to and comfortable with, the concept of paying to use roads, and French roads - especially motorways - are amazing to drive on!! So I reckon they actually spend the money on keeping the roads spick and span, which is why they charge you to use them in the first place.
Our problem is, British roads are RUBBISH!!
And I also hate this whole 'tracking' idea.
But Mark reckons there'd be a revolution if 'they' tried to implement something like that anyway...
So - let's see.
Thanks for the link btw, I'll go and have a look

Lol...!!
See, now I really wouldn't mind that. Talk about turning the nation's health around!
Plus investing in a bike would still be cheaper in the long run than this stupid scandalous scheme they're allegedly proposing.
Talking of which, we vaguely talked at the start of the new year, about getting ourselves kitted out as a family, with one of those trailers for the littlies, like the ones they have in germanic countries.
We'll see.
Probably one of those vague plans one makes that never see the light of day!!
