We stayed in part of a gorgeous converted farmhouse, with our own front door, lounge, kitchen bathroom and 4-poster bed on a mezzanine floor; we were surrounded by hills, lavender and cattle, and had 24-hr access to a beautiful outdoor pool. How very extremely romantic I think you'll agree...
We had hired a little Ford KA (on a local's advice that it would serve us better than a Fiat Punto) and did quite a few miles to revel in the exquisite Umbrian countryside and little hill-villages.
Orvieto, Perugia and Assissi were also part of our sightseeing and were a great insight into local Italian existence-once the tourists had left, that is! We enjoyed some good cuisine, although were somewhat disappointed by what folk call Pizza; we reckoned we could easily get nicer ones in our Pizza-Express back home...However, soaking up the atmosphere whilst ambling along the towns' narrow streets more than made up for the italians' lack of expertise in pizza-making.
Back at the "Casa di Piandelbello", lazing around by the pool-side was easily a highlight of the whole trip, although the water was way too cold for me to actually swim (I did have a dip or two); but Mark thoroughly loved it, especially 'after-hours'...and was like the proverbial fish in water! He spent many hours in the fresh water pontificating on the benefits of being a pool-owner and did a lot of measuring of the pool's dimensions to see if having one the same size in our back garden might be a possibility. Thankfully after much praying on my part Mark came to the conclusion that it would probably be cheaper in the long run to come back to Piandelbello on a regular basis to indulge in his pool-fantasy.
We left on the Friday morning, and headed for the capital city...:RRRROMA!! It took us quite a long time (hmmmmm...) to navigate our way into the city once we'd come off the 'Autovia', but we eventually found our 4star hotel.
And although we only had about 24 hours in Rome, we can well and truly declare that we 'did' Rome - and utterly fell in love with it... (my feet didn't but then I should've known better than to wear sweaty trainers in 35-degree city-heat)!
Anyway, without further ado, here are some pictures...
